n 2000 and
2001 Sony's VAIO line of computers came in a dozen
varieties of desktops and laptops. Each one of these models had
a pre-installed screen saver that would drop into a demo of the
computer's features when the computer was no longer idle. This
allowed the retail store to run the eye-catching screen saver
and allow customers to approach the machine to get more
information. The screen saver needed to be engaging and didactic
at once; and the interactive demos needed to be fresh and
interesting.
Working with Kinetiscope we designed and developed the Flash
demo portions of these screen savers, and later the screen
savers themselves. They were created in tandem with Sony's VAIO
web demos. These were microsite counterparts to the in-store
interactive demo that we created for the newly launched "sony
style" site. As such all of the pieces had a consistent look and
were not only complimentary to each other, but helped reinforce
the VAIO brand.
Like all of the projects we did at this time for Sony, the
interactive animations were all done in Flash. We created
engaging examples of each of the new features and their
capabilities for every model. We provided maintenance and
updated the files frequently to account for the ever-improving
VAIO technology. The look-and-feel of these projects reflected
cutting-edge innovation without succumbing to the common flaw of
edgy tech-driven design that alienates and confuses the user.
The interface was elegant and sophisticated but still
straight-forward and the information easily accessible.
