his photographer creates not only impressive studio images but she also has a striking body of work documenting the gritty urban street drama of daily life in the boroughs of New York City. Her photographs reveal a myriad of sub-cultures in the city; and the incisive nature in which they are documented provides the viewer with a kind of insight without interference.

Shelby needed a way to present her elegant studio photography as well as her editorial street work. We decided that a minimal site design that put the focus on one photograph at a time would be the most impactful way to display the varied nature of her work. The site was divided into three sections—her studio, editorial and portrait work—each section has the ability to scroll through a related set of photographs one-at-a-time.

The result is that each photograph is made special and given individual attention. Additionally, since they are viewed in a linear way, Shelby's documentary stories are assembled in order, and the viewer gets the experience of a set of photographs. Each image can inform the next without distracting from it with direct competition on screen.

SPECIAL UPDATE FEATURE:
Shelby's portfolio is one in a series of photographer's sites that we have done that are in Flash but are updateable by our client. This feature is usually reserved for high-end website development—where a little application is made that allows the client to edit their site without knowing anything about building websites.

We have mimicked this capability in a primitive way. Our client uses their browser to upload, delete, or re-arrange images on their site. We have also created a set of special password-accessed areas that are individual editable showcases. This allows our client to create specialized presentations for his customers without disrupting what others see in the portfolio.

This is a Flash site that uses its ActionScript to access an XML file. That file in turn instructs Flash to load jpgs sitting in a folder on the server. The advantage of using XML is that the photos are loaded on demand, avoiding long loading wait times, and unnecessary processor strain. The other advantage is that editing the XML file will change what happens with inside the published Flash piece without having to open the Flash authoring environment.

The client is free of having to learn the intricacies of the web and web development as the client accesses the admin area via their preferred browser, and by performing actions similar to adding an attachment to an email they can update their own site.
