otherland is
Pamela Marin's powerful account of a
personal reckoning. Pamela was only fourteen
when her mother died of breast cancer. Both
her mother's illness and death were kept hidden
from her person, not only due to her age and to the
times but also because of her father's
religious beliefs and method of coping with
"bad thoughts". It was many years after her
mother's death when an intangible grief and
longing overtook Pamela; it was a primal
force that compelled her to track down the
enigma, to solve the mystery that was her
mother's death and life.
Sarah Blake of the Chicago Tribune writes: "...Motherland sticks with
you long after it's done. Marin travels far
beyond the borders of a daughter's search
for her dead mother to bring us a searing
look at the long tendrils of grief wrapped
around every member of a family."
In addition to providing an inquisitive
audience with the prologue to her book there
were a couple of other items that were important for
Pamela in the creation of a promotional
website for her memoir.
She wanted to be
sure to be able have her readers reach her;
she wanted not just a personal contact but
also an updateable readings and events
section that she could add to as new events
were scheduled.
Additionally she wanted to
be able to share the paintings she'd
discovered in her investigation of her
mother. These poignant self-portraits were a
reward for Pamela's tenacity as she had
"unearthed" them in an abandoned storage
locker. SeedyPumpkins created a gallery for these and
other works by Pamela's mother. Through them
the viewer can trace an outline along with
Pamela of a talented young woman finding her
way from a small town in Tennessee to art
school and beyond.
