 eanmarie Theobalds is a powerful portrait photographer. Her stoic subjects confront the viewer from within their frames. Each portrait is a multi-faceted story with the sitter at its center—orbited by vignettes of activity. The spell cast by the sitter's captured gaze penetrates and enchants, and their surroundings become areas of infinite engrossment. The viewer searches for further revelations in the periphery of her images.
In addition to creating majestic portraits Jeanmarie captures her surroundings in photographs with the same iconographic appeal. Enhanced meaning and mystery are lent to the subjects of her still lifes; her landscapes are infused with an ethereal other-worldly presence. Each photograph engages the viewer's imagination in an attempt to decipher the story it presses forward from question into consciousness.
The portfolio site we created flirts with the mystery and enigma inherent in Jeanmarie's work. With the torn and rusticated edges of an aged travelogue, the interface of the site allows the sense of story that is imbued in each image to remain unchallenged. The texture of the portfolio allows the flavor of her pieces to be showcased without being over-bearing.
The simple navigation allows the user to access two different main portfolios (each containing 20 photographs), as well as samples from some works-in-series. The imagery dominates the page, they are vibrant color bursting forth from the natural earthy tones of the backdrop in which they sit.
