he Potters: Documenting the Tradition of Women Potters in the Interior of Bahia, Brazil.

Jeanmarie Theobalds is a powerful portrait photographer. Her stoic subjects confront you from within their frames. Each portrait is a multi-faceted story with the sitter at its center—orbited by vignettes of activity. The spell cast by the sitter's captured gaze penetrates and enchants, and their surroundings become areas of infinite engrossment. The viewer searches for further revelations about the arresting portrait in the periphery.

While traveling in Brazil Jeanmarie began photographing and documenting the stories of women potters in one of the most rural areas of the country. Through interview and portraiture she examined the generational traditions and rituals of these women, and how their individual experiences were woven into the larger social and economic story of the region.

The presentation we created is a teaser for her exhibition of these portraits—a selection of 13 pieces from the series are highlighted on a mini-CD. Each of the portraits is initially presented on its own, the viewer is confronted by each new image without embellishment. As each piece is introduced the user can choose to zoom in and explore the detail in the individual photographs. In addition, the viewer can opt to be provided with more information about the sitter—bits of recorded interview and an English translation from Portuguese is accessible.

The result is an intimate and textured experience. Jeanmarie's photographs are proximate—the screen illuminates the detailed portraits of each woman in such a way so as to make her familiar. This sensation is coupled and contrasted with the tinny sounds of home-life in lands far away. The potter's rich laughter, their children crying in the background, the muffled voices of their men are sounds you expect to hear, they somehow exist in the photographs themselves anyway. This presentation makes them tangible.

This is a Flash-based self-executable file on a business card CD-ROM. The Flash file is divided up into smaller units for the detail zoom-ins and informational panels. These individual swfs are loaded on demand. This keeps the piece performing smoothly, with out large amounts of data being constantly churned by the computers processor.

It has an auto-start feature for PC users.
