s the American branch of the Japanese Publishing house Kodansha set off for the BEA they took along this teaser that was both a looping animation and an interactive display in their booth. It was an attention-drawing piece that showcased one of their lead cooking titles: The Breakaway Japanese Kitchen.

For this piece we employed some earlier thoughts we had had about "bringing something new" to book promotion. We had already built a prototype teaser of sorts that would animate a small amount of the content of an upcoming illustrated book. That prototype (see Nars: Make-Up Your Mind) proved an excellent launching pad for the creation of this animated promotion.

We highlighted some of the splashy photography from the cookbook and worked in an appropriately fresh color palette and type treatment that spoke to the flavor of the book. We added its physical specs, some contact information and even a sample recipe. The whole piece was burned onto a mini-CD and given out to interested buyers. It also ran as an interactive display, that looped a slide show of some of the book's photography when it had been idle for a few minutes.

Our presentation was a big hit. In addition to being an asset for marketing at the BEA, Kodansha's Special Sales Department found it useful in sending out splashy sales packages, that breathed life into the ordinary industry-standard tip-sheets.
